Kinglake
Kinglake is located 57 kilometers east of Melbourne. The population is approximately 1482 and is situated in the shire of Murrindindi. From the early days when gold was discovered in 1861 on Mount Slide which is to the east of the town to the present where the local football club "known as the Lakers" were runners up in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League, Kinglake and its people continue to show great spirit in the face of severe adversity. February 7th will forever be known as black Saturday where fires tried to rip the soul out of this township. The fires the worst in the town's history destroyed many homes and killed many people including Brian Naylor who used to read the news for channel nine. The charred remains of houses, trees, & farm sheds could be seen in all directions. Even weeks after the fires, the first time i drove to Kinglake, even though i had seen what had happened i was not prepared for what i saw. What i did see was what the fire couldn't take away. The spirit of the people was everywhere. The one area to survive somewhat was the sports oval about 2 kilometers out of town. The Lakers played a game (Round 1) in April against the Emerald Football Club and won and from there on the people had something to really cheer about. And as mentioned earlier the Lakers had a great year to finish runners up. The football club gave the community something to cheer for and a little time ot forget the horror. Kinglake is slowly rebuilding and with the community I continue to see it won't be long before Kinglake is once again a vibrant town. To all those who may read this please visit Kinglake.
