HISTORY
Mount Evelyn was originally called a few different names like Olinda Vale, Billygoat Hill, McKillop/Valinda, Evelyn and then finally Mount Evelyn. Farmers came into the area in about the 1870's and tried crops such as apples, raspberries, potatoes, turnips, peas, barley, rye, oats, grass and willows. The soil was very difficult to farm with and they were many times unsuccessful. The railway line eventually came to Mount Evelyn in 1901. It operated on the Warburton line. The station was originally called Olinda Vale, then changed to Evelyn in 1912 and eventually was known as Mount Evelyn Railway Station in 1919. When the station opened it brought many Melbourne residents to Mount Evelyn and surrounding areas for vacations. The station closed in 1965. POWERFUL OWL
Mt Evelyn has been known to be home to one of Australia’s largest owls, The Powerful Owl. This spectacular bird is considered to be an endangered species and is listed as threatened under Victorian’s Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act. A very shy bird in particular the female, she will desert the nest after minimal human disturbance. The male however may become very aggressive in the breeding season and could attack humans should they come near the nest. The Powerful Owl feeds on medium sized arboreal marsupials like, ringtail possums and the sugar glider. An interesting fact about the Powerful Owl is that it’s monogamous and mates for life. Nesting occurs from late autumn to mid-winter. Clutches consists of two dull white eggs and incubation lasts approximately 38 days. Due to the reduction in hollow bearing trees for nest sites and The Powerful Owls sensitivity to human disturbance these magnificent birds could disappear. Mt Evelyn should take great pride in that the Powerful Owl considers their township special enough to nest. www.dse.vic.gov.au/CA256F310024B628/0/.../PowerfulOwls.pdf
