The Basin

History of the Basin started when a man of German decent and botanist hired by the state to document the flora in the Dandenongs camped in a flat area known now as Doongalla Homestead surrounded by mountains on three sides and called it the basin.Some of the early settlers to The Basin where David Dobson, J.J. Miller, Edmund Wicks, William Chandler where known in the community for farming and logging, horse racing, farming and orchards, and a Nursery. In regards to the sawmill there are still remnants left of the pay office and three cottages that housed the workers. The horse racing stables and grounds is where the present Batterham Reserve is, Wick’s Reserve was part of his orchards, Chandler Nursery was on the now Como House land.





The Emblem is the Eastern Rosella which is used by the Basin Primary School, Scoot Group and local Football Club but is now known as the Bears.
In the area we have Historical places of interest such as Miller’s Homestead which is now known as Melrose House in addition it has very nice Gardens, Ambleside Park Cottage which houses the Knox Historical Society.

Visitors to the Basin can also go to Como Gardens, which also has a great Automobile Museum as well.
